Science with Miss Grigg

Class 9a put on their Scientific Hats on Friday to discover what would happen when we mixed Vinegar with Baking Soda in a jar, and cover it with a disposable rubber glove.

We discussed that Baking Soda is a solid and Vinegar is a liquid. We recognised there was a third property in the science world called gas which led the children to hypothesise what would happen when the solid and liquid were mixed together Children made predictions about what they thought would happen and we managed to narrow it down to four options:

1. The mixture would explode

 2. The mixture would fizz

 3. The mixture would rise

 4. The mixture would do nothing

Here's what happened:

After the experiment we discussed the results… When the Baking Soda (solid) and Vinegar (liquid) are mixed, gas was created! The mixture also fizzed and rose up the jar. The gas that was created blew up the disposable glove that was wrapped over the top of the jar. Students then posed the question – how much Vinegar and Baking Soda would it take for there to be an explosion?

The students re-enacted the molecules that were packed tightly together in a solid form and the student-molecules then dispersed around the room after the liquid was added!!

Despite some students being disappointed there wasn’t an explosion, it is fair to say it was a very fun experiment for a Friday afternoon!
